The importance and method of oil filter maintenance

Oil Filters have a life expectancy, and it’s not indefinite. Users should be aware that certain operating conditions can suddenly alter the performance of the filter and shorten its useful life. The unpleasant consequence of most filter failures is the freedom to ride into sensitive machine parts and particles on the friction surface, causing damage and premature failure.

Paying close attention to the performance of the filter is critical to mechanical reliability. Many times, many people in the maintenance field do not seem to notice the importance and method of doing so. The best strategy is the proactive strategy. You don’t have to detect and diagnose a problem that doesn’t exist.

The following are ideas to avert problems with filters:

1. Choose quality Filter Assemblies (filter housing, valves, change indicators and Filter Elements).

2. Over-size your oil filters to reduce fatigue caused by high-flow density, cold starts and surge-flow conditions.

3. Inspect new filters and store them in a clean and protected environment.

4. Learn how to install filters to avoid damage to filter media and seals.

5. Inspect filter housings carefully for stuck bypass valves, missing springs and sludge conditions.

Used filters are often a dead giveaway of filtration problems. Learn to read the warning signs.Inspect used filters for:

1. Damage of filter elements such as tears, buckled media, collapsed center-tubes, pinched seals, etc.

2. Unusual particles and soft, sludgy material on the filter media

3. Varnish on end-caps and/or center-tubes

4. Sludge and/or water in filter bowls/housings

5. Corrosion on filter housing or Filter Element surfaces

When problems are found, don’t forget to troubleshoot and remediate.
